Big Damn British Shindig

A message from a Sarah

Hello, I’m a member of a group of Browncoats living out on the raggedy edge of Britain in the West Country. We’re looking to throw a shindig next year – The Big Damn British Shindig – which will be held in Penzance (of pirates and smugglers fame). We’re in the planning phase at the moment, so if you’re interested please check out our FaceBook page, let us know what you think, what you’d like to see at the weekend event, and especially if you’d come. Thank you, and stay shiny!

Here is the Facebook link:

As they make concrete plans we will be sure to keep yall informed!

    Sounds fun.

    For the benefit of those of us not on Facebook, any chance you could post details here?

  2. Dave

    Or make your Facebook page accessible to all?

    I wish you luck with the Big Damn British Shindig. Being here in the US, I obviously can’t attend but I hope you get the help and turnout!

    Hiya, latest information on FaceBook is that they are looking at a date around August 27th in Cornwall, but this could change. The organisers are currently exploring options to allow folks to hire a suitable Firefly’esque outfit for the ball…

    As more details are firmed up I will share them…

    Hi guys, we are hoping to get our own website up soon, we have a venue but just need to finalise the date. The Facebook page should be accessible to all, although only members can post. It should be a great deal of fun 🙂

    The Facebook page is not accessible to all. When I visit it, I am greeted with a page which says “You must log in to continue”. Since I do not have a Facebook account (and never will), I cannot continue past this point.

    Please consider making your information more widely available? This blog seems an ideal place to post all details.

      Ah yes, of course, sorry I wasn’t clearer about that. A Facebook account IS required, thank you for pointing that out (so…I’ve obviously become one of THEM – people who assume everyone has a FaceBook page *sigh* I’m disappointed with myself). Yes, I will post here as well, and as I said, we should have our own website soon too.

    The new Sending a Wave podcast is available, and they mention us! If you’re not already listening to it, check it out, it’s a British firefly podcast…it’s the only British Firefly podcast 🙂

    Here’s a precis of what is on the FaceBook page:

    I may not be up for making myself a full on ball gown, but we do have our official costumiers,

    There has been some interest in my arranging a trip to St. Michael’s Mount.

    If you’re wondering where you could stay while in Penzance we’re actually very well served, being a tourist town, from camp sites to the YHA and YMCA to the Queen’s Hotel, with a whole lot of B&Bs in between.
    When the web site is up and running I will be making a list.

    So, workshops could be brawling, swearing, dancing, line dancing… any other ideas? In Plymouth there’s ‘The Escape Rooms’ where you have to solve puzzles to escape…that’s grabbed my imagination, although I may lack the ability to create something myself.

    Our venue: The Ritz, not a hotel (began as a theatre, then was a cinema then a Bingo Hall), is an art deco building that is much loved but has seen better days – shabby chic, you might say. One of the nice things about this venue is that it will be all ours – no regular (Alliance?) guests.

    I thought I’d explain the flag – the 130th Brigade is the army’s Devon and Cornwall Brigade and the words at the bottom come from the last line of a verse the leader of the Dorset men, the Tolpuddle Martyrs, wrote before being shipped off to Australia:

    God is our guide! from field, from wave,
    From plough, from anvil, and from loom;
    We come, our country’s rights to save,
    And speak a tyrant faction’s doom:
    We raise the watch-word liberty;
    We will, we will, we will be free!

    It felt rather Browncoatish to me 🙂

    Hello, quick update. I can now confirm that The Big Damn British Shindig will take place on August bank holiday of 2016, that’s the evening of Friday the 26th, all day Saturday the 27th and until midday on Sunday the 28th. It will be held at The Ritz in Penzance – not a hotel, it’s an art deco building that began life as a theatre, then became a cinema, and then a Bingo Hall before being taken over by a groups of people dedicated to preventing it being demolished.
